Audi Hong Kong to enter TCR Asia with new RS 3 LMS

Audi Hong Kong confirmed today they will field an RS 3 LMS in the 2017 TCR Asia series. The operation will be run by Phoenix Racing Asia, with 17-year old Jasper Thong behind the wheel.

“The Audi RS 3 LMS signals a new era for Audi Hong Kong”, said Audi Hong Kong managing director Rene Koneberg. “Off the back of the highly successful Audi R8 LMS GT3 program we are glad that Audi Sport has developed a completely new RS 3 LMS, showcasing the technology transfer from motorsport to production vehicles perfectly.”

“I’m excited to have Jasper Thong in the Audi Hong Kong team”, added Koneberg. “It will be great to watch his career continue to develop as the season unfolds”

Thong previously raced in the AFR open-wheel development category, and made a one-off appearance in Audi’s R8 LMS Cup. Despite his young age, the driver feels he is ready to take the challenge of the front-wheel drive RS 3 LMS: “It’s a big step for me, but a step I feel ready to take”, said the Hong Kong driver. “All my life I have been surrounded by motorsport, it’s something that has been a big part of my life, and I have spent a lot of time concentrating on building my career in karts and open-wheelers. I’m looking forward to what TCR Asia has to offer, whilst representing proudly Audi Hong Kong and Phoenix Racing Asia.”

Thong will have his first taste of the new machinery today and tomorrow during the two days of scheduled testing at Sepang, Malaysia, where the TCR Asia season will kick off this weekend.
