Twilight races confirmed for Australian Grand Prix weekend

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship will feature a pair of twilight races when the series races for points on the Australian Grand Prix bill for the first time next month.

Having previously been a non-scoring event, the Australian GP meeting will this season form part of the full championship season, with four races in total across the weekend as drivers do battle for the Larry Perkins Trophy.

The provisional schedule for the weekend has now revealed that twilight races for the Supercars will be held on the Friday and Saturday evenings; with both running for 25 laps and featuring a mandatory stop for fuel and tyres.

Races on Saturday and Sunday afternoon will then be sprints contested over 13 laps.

“The twilight timeslot works well for our television audience as well as fans at the track, who will get to see our first points races at Albert Park in perfect conditions,” acting Supercars CEO Shane Howard said. “To participate fully as a round of our championship in Melbourne with 400km of racing across three days which includes pitstops, is a huge win for our fans, teams and our drivers.

“It is an honour to be alongside Formula 1 at Albert Park and as an official support category to the world’s premiere form of motorsport.”
