John Filippi targeting points after strong qualifying display in Morocco

Campos Racing’s John Filippi will start at worse sixth for the first round of the World Touring Car Cup in Morocco, after a strong performance in the upgraded Cupra TCR run by Campos Racing at the street track.

Filippi was seven-tenths of a second off the pace, with the 23-year-old remarking that he benefitted from Norbert Michelisz’s engine fire, which stopped a number of his rivals from improving.

“I think I was a little bit lucky as I did a good lap time before the red flag, and after that the track was a little bit dirty from Norbert’s oil, so I think the other drivers found it hard to improve,” said Filippi to TouringCarTimes.

The Corsican is aiming to have a good result in Saturday afternoon’s race before it starts again on Sunday with a separate qualifying session and two more races.

“I think I can fight, I have enough experience and the car and support to do it,” he added. “I hope to finish in the points. The target is to score points as it’ll be nice to start on Sunday morning with some points behind us.”
