Jamie Whincup loses second place after post-race penalty

Jamie Whincup has lost second place from the first Supercars Championship race of the weekend at Phillip Island after a post-race penalty of 38 seconds, which drops him to 14th position.

The penalty was given as the Triple Eight Race Engineering driver had deactivated his pit lane speed limiter before the end of the pit lane during his first stop of the race, and then exceeded the limit.

The penalty has dropped Whincup from second to fourth in the championship, 76 points behind championship leader and race winner Scott McLaughlin.

Simona De Silvestro was also given a post-race penalty. The Nissan driver was given the penalty for her incident with Jack Le Brocq on the fourth lap of the race. The stewards decision was:

“Following the race, at the request of Nissan Motorsport, the DRD conducted an investigation into an allegation that Car #19, Jack Le Brocq, had brake-checked Car #78, Simona de Silvestro, at Turn 10 on Lap 4.

“After reviewing judicial camera footage of the incident from Car #78, the DRD determined that Car #19 had not committed any breach of the Rules, but Car #78 had driven carelessly in breach of Article 2.1.1 of the Code of Driving Conduct (Schedule B2) in causing contact with Car #19 causing Car #19 to spin and lose positions.

“The breach was admitted by Car #78 and the stewards imposed a 15 second post-race time penalty on Car #78.”
