Mikel Azcona says second place is a “fantastic result”

PCR Sport driver Mikel Azcona qualified his Cupra TCR in second position for tomorrow’s Race 1 at Zandvoort, with the Spaniard remarking that second place is a great result against the almost unbeatable Audi of Jaap van Lagen.

Azcona outpaced van Lagan after the Dutchman made an error on his first run, but without another set of fresh tyres for a second attempt, he fell prey to van Lagen’s second run in the Team WRT Audi RS 3 LMS.

“Qualifying was fantastic for me,” said Azcona to TouringCarTimes. “I had some problems in Q1, but we made it into Q2 where we had new tyres. We only had one lap, and we pushed really, really hard behind the Audi and I did a really fantastic lap, but the Audi’s really strong and we couldn’t do more.

“Second place is a good result for us and to be the first Cupra, which is the main thing. Tomorrow, if we were in a podium position, that will be fantastic for us.”
