Sunny Wong and Alex Hui take Zhuhai Race 3 win for Teamwork

Sunny Wong and Alex Hui have won the final race of the weekend of the TCR China Touring Car Championship weekend at Zhuhai, with Wong driving through after the mandatory pit stop to overtake the early race-leading MacPro Racing Honda for the victory.

Just seven cars made the start of Race 3 after six cars were eliminated due to damage from the incident-heavy second race earlier in the day.

The #99 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR of Lv Xin Min started on pole position for the reversed grid, but was quickly passed by Alex Hui’s Teamwork Volkswagen at the rolling start before Li Lin then took the lead in his #77 LEO Racing Golf.

Both cars were then passed on lap three by Henry Ho in the #88 MacPro Racing Honda, who quickly built a lead, while Li Lin spun out into the gravel trap and retired, handing second place back to Hui.

Meanwhile, the NewFaster Racing Audi RS 3 LMS of Tang Carson was working his though the order, and was up to third before the pit stop sequence, after which Tang moved ahead of the Teamwork Volkswagen for second, while de Jesus had now handed back the Civic to co-driver Eurico de Jesus with a 20 second lead.

With the driver change complete, the shape of the race began to change, with Wong now closing down on Tang’s Audi, making his move on lap 18 to take second position.

Wong then decimated Dr Jesus’s lead in the Honda, and overtook the Civic on lap 25 and began building a lead of his own as described Jesus was now being caught by Tang’s Audi.

It was all for nought however as de Jesus’s Honda ground to a halt on lap 30 with a puncture, with Tang promoted to second and the #8 MacPro Honda of Kevin Lom and Miguel Kong now promoted to third.

Wong went on to win the race by 22 seconds over the NewFaster Audi of Tang Carson, with the Honda of Kevin Lom third, a minute behind.

Tian Li Ying and Li Xue Feng’s HE Racing Volkswagen was fourth, a further 12 seconds behind, with Lv Xin Min and Lai Wee Sing’s DRT Racing Volkswagen the last car to make the finish, with Ho and de Jesus’s car classified in sixth, three laps down.

With Ho and de Jesus not finishing, Wong and Hui lead the championship after one race meeting on 42 points, six points clear of the Honda pair heading to the next round again at Zhuhai on July 1st.
