Alfa Romeo drivers and Aurélien Panis fined for leaving the track early

Fabrizio Giovanardi, Gianni Morbidelli and Aurélien Panis have been fined 1,500 EUR each for leaving the circuit to catch their flights instead of attending the stewards’ investigations post-race at Zandvoort.

Giovanardi was under investigation for an incident in Race 2 in which he collided with Comtoyou Racing’s Aurélien Panis, for which he was actually cleared of responsibility as Panis’ car had a technical fault.

Morbidelli was under investigation for two incidents. For hitting Aurélien Panis’ Audi in Race 3 at Turn 9 where he gained the position, and for the incident which eventually saw him drop to the back of the field after contact with Campos Racing’s John Filippi on lap 13.

Filippi was cleared of blame for the collision, which the stewards’ deemed a racing incident.

Morbidelli was found guilty in absentia of gaining a position through contact with Panis, and handed a 30-second penalty, but as he was the last car on the lap this makes no difference to his finishing position of 20th.
