Mikel Azcona on cloud nine after Spa-Francorchamps podium

Mikel Azcona extended his lead in the championship to five points, finishing on the podium in the first race at Spa-Francorchamps. The Spaniard is not only happy with the result, but he is also satisfied with his performances at the wheel of his PCR Sport Cupra.

“The race was very comfortable for me,” said the Spaniard to TouringCarTimes. “I made a fantastic start and maintained the position. I was faster than (Dusan) Borkovic, so all I had to do was avoiding mistakes and just keep my pace, because the car was good all through the race. It’s my first time here at Spa, which is an amazing track but it’s also difficult, and I improved step-by-step, so that alone makes me happy.”

“I’m glad I managed to keep Borkovic behind, because it would have at least taken time to pass him back. I would have passed, but it would have cost me time. To be honest I don’t think I could have kept up with the pace of the (Jean-Karl) Vernay and (Maxime) Potty, because this is the limit of my car, I know I’m giving it everything and I can’t do any better.”

Azcona holds a five-point margin over Hyundai’s Dusan Borkovic, with race winner Jean-Karl Vernay a further 22 points behind.
