Stefano Comini urges track limits rethink after Assen frustration

Stefano Comini has labelled the track limits penalties incurred at Assen this weekend as a “joke” after having to fight through the pack for the second successive round.

The Autodis by THX Racing driver set the ninth fastest time in qualifying but dropped to 11th after a number of drivers had their best times deleted.

While some drivers, including championship contenders Dusan Borkovic, Mikel Azcona and Dániel Nagy had their times reinstated, Comini didn’t, owing to the Swiss driver going marginally quicker after his infringement.

“I qualified ninth and started 11th because they complain about the track limits. Okay? They give back the times to the others but they didn’t give back my time,” an enraged Comini told TouringCarTimes.

“I was a little bit faster than the others, but this is a f***ing joke. I don’t know what to do.

“I am happy with these races, let’s say, but it’s the same as Hungary. I’m pissed off at the track limits, we have to stop with all this bulls**t, because now I had to start further back on the grid again.”

Comini fought his way up the order to finish a strong fourth in the opening race before repeating the result in the second encounter.

But the double TCR International Series champion vented his frustration at being unable to fight for victories this season.

“I can’t do a miracle every race so this has to stop now. I don’t care about that race, I want to battle on the track, not in race control. It was a race to avoid a tyre on the corner, it’s crazy,” Comini said.

“It needs to be consistent for everybody, even for the championship contenders. It’s not right.

Comini’s attentions now turn to the next round at Monza, which he considers his home event as an Italian speaker. He is also hopeful of fewer track limit infringements at the Grand Prix circuit.

“I don’t care about points, I’m here to win. I missed one event this year so I only want to improve the car and the set-up.

“But I’m really pissed off. I hope in Monza it will be better. At Monza, if you do track limits you are in the gravel.”
