Jean-Karl Vernay hopes pole position paves the way for perfect weekend

Jean-Karl Vernay’s pole position looked easy from the outside, as he was able to outpace everyone in both qualifying sessions, also thanks to the top speed advantage of his WRT Audi RS 3 LMS. However, according to the Frenchman, the strong showing at Monza balances itself out with other tracks at which the German cars have struggled.

“We knew the track was for us, just like we knew Hungaroring wasn’t earlier this year,” said Vernay to TouringCarTimes. “When you look at the Cupra we are not that far away, we’re not a second faster than everyone. There are tracks where we are really slow and good tracks for us like Monza, but we have to use this track to score big points. I have a Cupra (Mikel Azcona’s) starting right behind me and I can’t take a lot of points from him even if I win.”

The Frenchman does not deny the goal is to score the perfect weekend, taking all the 55 points at stake, just like Gianni Morbidelli did in his WestCoast Racing Honda in 2015 at Monza.

“I can see us scoring the perfect weekend with two wins and pole position. It’s just about being smart, not being touched by anyone and try to be patient tomorrow with the reversed grid, taking it step-by-step. We can do it, the top speed could allow us to make it. Obviously you never know how the races are going to be, but I definitely think we have the best possible chance, without thinking about the championship.”
