We had the four ingredients needed to win, says Dick Bennetts

West Surrey Racing principal Dick Bennetts said the “four ingredients needed to win” BTCC titles were all achieved by his team this year, after picking up the triple-crown of drivers, teams and manufacturers’ championships.

The New Zealander said that while races can be won with only three of the key elements, a good car, engine, team and driver is needed to take home the silverware at the season’s end.

Bennetts paid tribute to the “team effort” which resulted in a third BTCC crown for Colin Turkington along with successive teams’ and manufacturers’ crowns for Team BMW and BMW respectively.

Speaking to TouringCarTimes, Bennetts said: “A triple-crown is incredible – we haven’t had a pole position since mid-2015, Colin has only won one race so it is consistency which has won this.

“It’s down to everything from the drivers to the work we’ve done on the tyres, the cars and the preparation. It’s a package.

“I’ve always said you need four ingredients to win. You need a good car, a good engine, a good team and a good driver. You can win races with three of the four, but you need all four to win a championship.

“We had two titles last year and this year we have three – it is a real team effort.”
