Richard Göransson thrilled with best ever season start
BMW Dealer Team driver Richard Göransson was thrilled after his best ever STCC season start.
“I am super pleased, what a premiere! Victory and a second place, four bonus points from qualifying and the championship lead. It couldn’t have gone any better,” said Göransson.
The 34-year-old started strongly in qualifying, securing pole for the second race with close to two tenths and underlining his strength in the first race by winning with close to 10 seconds after getting past Volvo’s Robert Dahlgren early on.
“It was like my victory at this track in 2006. I saw that Dahlgren hadn’t got the temperature up in his tyres and I thought it was best to attack straight away,” said Göransson.
The second race saw Volvo rival Thed Björk pulling away early in the race as Göransson bogged down in the start. The BMW driver chased after the Volvo driver, but was unable to get past and finished just 0.9 seconds behind.
“Thed was surprisingly quick. My plan was to wait for his tyres to degrade, but he kept going and I knew he was never going to let me past,” said Göransson.
Göransson heads the championship on 47 points, eight points ahead of Björk, with the next race coming up at Solvalla in five weeks.
“Next up is the Nürburgring 24 Hours for me as build-up for Solvalla. I can’t wait, my season couldn’t have started better,” said Göransson.
