Andrew Jordan given grid penalty for Snetterton (updated)

Reigning British Touring Car champion Andrew Jordan has been given a ten-place grid penalty for the next round of the Championship after the summer break, after an incident with Motorbase Performance driver Fabrizio Giovanardi in the third and final race of the day at Croft, after a fight for the lead.

The Eurotech Racing driver made contact with Giovanardi heading down the back of the circuit, sliding Giovanardi’s Ford Focus ST into a Recticel barrier at Barcroft, which caused terminal damage to the Italian’s car, while Jordan assumed the lead and was unchallenged until the end, and took his fourth win of the season.

The 25-year-old explained after the race that he believed Giovanardi was suffering with a technical problem, as the 47-year-old was off-throttle and slowing when the two made contact, but the stewards saw differently and have handed Jordan a grid penalty for the next round of the Championship at Snetterton in five weeks’ time.

Jordan currently sits third in the drivers’ championship standings after five of ten events, 28 points behind West Surrey Racing’s Colin Turkington and 23 behind the works Honda of Gordon Shedden, while he was a close second in the standings at this point last season, behind then championship leader Matt Neal.

The team have confirmed their intention to appeal the penalty, which will be heard at Snetterton.
