Volvo will ”always have its hand in racing”

A recent statement from the Volvo Cars’ Marketing Director Alain Visser, that motorsport does not conform with their brand, created a lot of controversy and put doubt on the current STCC and V8 Supercars programme of the Swedish manufacturer. Now it seems that the position of Volvo has changed.

Lex Kerssemakers, senior VP of Product Planning and Vehicle Line Management, stated in an interview with Car And Driver that:

”…Volvo, either with the company’s direct backing or through customer cars, will always have its hand in racing.”

Kerssemakers also stated that no decision has been taken yet on the future of Volvo Polestar Racing’s commitments in STCC and V8 Supercars when the contracts runs out for the two championships, in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

The recent turmoil regarding Volvo and motorsport seem to be based in a change in cooperation structure between Volvo and Polestar, the official motorsport and performance partner of Volvo. A Polestar spokesperson earlier stated to TouringCarTimes that:

”We have a long-term contract with Volvo as the official motorsport and performance partner. The form of cooperation regarding motorsport between Volvo and Polestar is currently being evolved and we look positively towards the future.”
