Fabian Coulthard takes race two win and championship lead

Fabian Coulthard won the second V8 Supercars race of 2015 in the 100th race of Brad Jones Racing and has taken the championship lead. The Holden driver won the race ahead of James Courtney and Craig Lowndes.

There was plenty of drama during the race, first off with Scott McLaughlin jumping the start from second on the grid to take the lead from Jamie Whincup.

The Volvo Polestar Racing driver was given a 10 second time penalty to take during his pitstop. McLaughlin pitted from the lead as the safety car was out on track and served his penalty. The problem was that taking a penalty during a safety car session is not allowed. This resulted in a further ten seconds added to his result, dropping him from third to ninth.

As McLaughlin made his pitstop, Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Whincup was back in the lead, but not for long. Whincup made a mistake and went wide in turn nine, allowing Coulthard to get past. Trouble continued for Whincup as he sustained a left rear puncture going in to the fastest corner of the track. Outstanding car control saw Whincup avoiding the barriers and was able to head into the pits for a new tyre, dropping him to 21st and last position.

Michael Caruso had crashed into the barriers of turn eight earlier, ending the race for the Nissan driver. Chaz Mostert was an even earlier victim of turn eight, clipping the inside curbs and sending his Ford Falcon FG X into the barriers and on to retirement. This lead to speculation that debris from those incidents caused the puncture for Whincup.

Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander finished fourth ahead of Jason Bright, with Nissan Motorsport colleagues Rick Kelly and James Moffat in positions six and seven.

Ashley Walsh made up for the disappointing results in the first race to finish eighth in the Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E63 AMG.

The Clipsal 500 weekend continues tomorrow with qualifying and the final race, starting at 15:25 local time.
