Will Davison takes emotional victory for Erebus Motorsport

Emotions ran high at Erebus Motorsport as Will Davison stormed up through the field towards the end of the third V8 Supercars race in Perth to take his first victory since 2013.

The Mercedes driver started seventh and it was not until the final part of the race after a safety car session that he started to work his way towards the lead. The safety car session was due to Davison’s team mate Ash Walsh spinning off into the gravel.

Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert was heading the field before the safety car period. But as the race resumed, both Ford drivers dropped right down the order as the tyre strategy went out of the window for them after the safety car session.

At first it looked like Craig Lowndes was heading for his 100th V8 Supercars victory, claiming the lead and pulling away. But Davison started to close in fast on the Triple Eight Race Engineering driver with about ten laps left.

The Erebus Motorsport driver made his move with four laps left and went on to win the race with close to six seconds to Lowndes.

Fabian Coulthard secured the final podium spot in third position, with Mostert clinging on to fourth position after being in the lead earlier in the race.

Holden Racing Team duo James Courtney and Garth Tander claimed positions five and six, with the top Nissan driver James Moffat in seventh position.

Reigning champion Jamie Whincup had an awful race, dropping from the top five early in the race due to what seemed to be a mistake that saw him going across the gravel trap. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver finished 19th in the end, one lap down on the leaders, behind Scott McLaughlin in 18th position who continues to struggle for pace.

Second position for Lowndes means the championship lead on 717 points, with Courtney in second position on 665 points and Winterbottom in third on 643 points. V8 Supercars continues in two weeks with the Winton SuperSprint.
