Andy Wilmot announces split from Welch Motorsport

Andy Wilmot has confirmed that he will part company with the Welch Motorsport team with immediate effect, citing troubles experienced since the start of the year as the reason for the acrimonious split.

Wilmot’s best result of the year was 20th at the third race of the season at Thruxton in the team’s Proton Gen-2, but in addition to his six finishes, counts four retirements and five DNSs on the scoresheet from the first 15 rounds of 2015.

“As upset as I am about not seeing out the rest of the season I am hugely relieved as it has been the biggest stress of my racing career,” said Wilmot on his Facebook account.

“Not one weekend went to plan nor was it trouble free. I have been spending money hand over fist and getting absolutely nothing out of it. The support along the way has been amazing and I want to thank each and every one of you for getting behind be and believing. I want to thank all of my sponsors as they have been patient and very understanding about the situation.

“If a seat comes available in the second half of the season I will be happy to jump in it but as it stands I have sponsors who are looking forward to supporting me for the 2016 BTCC.”

Wilmot’s departure leaves a seat free at the Welch Motorsport team, which the team are required to fill as part of their commitments with the organisers to keep their TOCA BTCC Licence (TBL), with one change of driver permitted per season.
