Jamie Whincup claims 95th V8 Supercars victory at Phillip Island

Jamie Whincup claimed his 95th V8 Supercars career victory in the second race of the weekend at Phillip Island.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver beat pole sitter Scott McLaughlin into the first corner and kept a lead of about two seconds throughout the 14-lap race.

There was a brief scare for the reigning champion as race control announced that his start was under investigation. But as replays showed, Whincup did not jump the lights and was not issued a jump start penalty.

Volvo Polestar Racing’s McLaughlin had previous race winner Craig Lowndes right behind him during the race, but managed to stay ahead to claim his second podium finish of the weekend in second place.

Lowndes finished third and continues to claw back points on championship leader Mark Winterbottom who finished fourth. The gap between the two is down to 209 points with four race heats left of the 2015 season.

Rod Nash Racing driver David Reynolds lost further points on the championship top duo in fifth position ahead of manufacturer colleague Scott Pye in sixth position.

The Nissan Motorsport duo of Michael Caruso and Rick Kelly claimed positions seven and eight, with Holden drivers Shane Van Gisbergen and James Courtney rounding off the top ten.

The V8 Supercars weekend at Phillip Island continues tomorrow with a final race of 200 kilometers.
