STCC to introduce new regulations “within a couple of years”

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship organisation has confirmed a change to new regulations “within a couple of years”.

“When the change to new regulations takes place, in a couple of years, I think the championship will really take off. But we need to wait for the right regulations, to see that it actually works,” said Jonas Lundin, Managing Director of STCC AB, on the official championship podcast.

The STCC has seen a downward trend of full-time entries for the past couple of seasons, with the 2015 season featuring 12 cars, and speculations have circulated regarding a change to the new TCR regulations.

“We are looking intensively at TCR and we consider it really exciting. I think that this is the type of regulations that we need and especially to have other championships on the same regulations around us. We are alone as it is now and that is not ideal, you need access to second-hand cars and an aftermarket. If TCR succeeds with what they have said for 2016 with seven to eight brands, then it is going to be really interesting for Sweden,” said Lundin.

The current regulations were introduced in 2013 following the STCC/TTA war and was confirmed earlier this year to be kept until at least 2017, regulations that according to Lundin keeps the championship from growing.

”It is a tough job to get more entries. With the current regulations that we have inherited, we are not able to get 25 cars on the grid that we are aiming for, that is just not possible. But with that said, the current regulations feature really cool cars and the goal for 2016 is to get a couple of more entries, something we are working hard on with the teams,” said Lundin.

Lundin has previously stated that more teams and manufacturers are looking to enter the championship for 2016 but with no specific details revealed so far.
