Shane van Gisbergen wins as Lee Holdsworth is hospitalised

Shane van Gisbergen got revenge from yesterday’s drive through penalty to win the second V8 Supercars race at Hidden Valley from pole position, a race filled with crashes.

The race started with a major incident for Lee Holdsworth at turn four, with the Charlie Schwerkolt Racing driver being taken to hospital with an injured leg.

The first lap also saw an incident between Fabian Coulthard and Chaz Mostert, going side-by-side and crashing hard with Coulthard retiring and Mostert dropping to last position after lengthy repairs in the pits.

There was further action in the safety car restart with reigning champion Mark Winterbottom pushing off Nissan driver Todd Kelly and being awarded a drive through penalty for the incident, dropping the Ford driver to 20th position.

A second incident came on lap ten with Scott Pye and David Reynolds clashing, with Pye stopping on track and Reynolds being investigated for the incident after the race.

Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Craig Lowndes held the lead ahead of the second safety car restart, but lost out to team mate Van Gisbergen who went on to win by 1.6 seconds ahead of Tim Slade, with Lowndes just four tenths behind in third position.

Tekno Autosports driver Will Davison took advantage of a three-stop strategy to finish fourth ahead of Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney in fifth position.

Race one winner Michael Caruso crossed the line in sixth position with Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin in seventh and multiple champion Jamie Whincup rounding off the top eight.

Whincup keeps the lead of the championship, 30 points ahead of team mate Lowndes and 45 points ahead of McLaughlin in third.
