Kristoffersson claims final STCC pole of 2016 as Dahlgren gains on Göransson

Johan Kristoffersson was fastest in the two final, rain-affected, qualifying sessions of the 2016 Scandinavian Touring Car Championship as Robert Dahlgren gained six points on team-mate and title rival Richard Göransson.

A rain shower passed the Knutstorp circuit just before qualifying, dropping lap times about eight seconds compared to the dry test sessions. The first Q1 session saw SEAT Dealer Team PWR Racing driver Kristoffersson on top, beating Dahlgren by 0.324 seconds.

Kristoffersson’s team-mate Daniel Haglöf was sandwiched by the two Volvo drivers, with Göransson being fourth fastest, 1.115 seconds from pole on the drying circuit. As Q1 is awarding points to the championship, Dahlgren gained six points to reduce the gap from 16 to ten points to Göransson.

STCC newcomer Philip Morin continues to impress by claiming fifth in Q1 ahead of Flash Engineering driver Linus Ohlsson in sixth.

There was further drama in the Q2 session as Dahlgren failed to make the session due to a drained battery, meaning that he will start eighth for the first race.

Kristoffersson was again fastest, taking full advantage of starting last in the session on the drying track, setting an impressive lap time of 1:05.532, a full 1.160 seconds faster than Göransson in second. While Göransson lost six points to Dahlgren in Q1, the advantage on grid positions is Göransson’s with second for race one and seventh for race two compared to Dahlgren’s eighth for race one and ninth for race two.

Morin claimed grid position three, a mere 0.074 seconds behind Göransson with Saab driver Björn Wirdheim in fourth and SEAT driver Haglöf in fifth.

The first race of the season finale weekend at Knutstorp starts at 12:55 CET tomorrow.
