Mat’o Homola hoping for more rain on Macau race day

Mat’o Homola was ninth in today’s qualifying at Macau. The B3 Racing driver enjoyed the wet qualifying, and hopes for more rain tomorrow in order to gain more experience in tricky conditions.

“In Q1 I had a big moment at Mandarin, so my fast lap was not really perfect,” said the Slovakian. “I had traffic in the first sector on the following lap and then the rain came, so I was happy to get through to Q2.”

Homola admits the rain made it all more difficult, especially in the very fast first sector of the track: “It was really difficult out there, on the main straight down to Mandarin there was a different type of tarmac compared to the second sector, so it would probably have required a different behaviour from the car. In the middle sector it was quite okay, there was good grip, so I took it step by step and tried to improve. My last lap was probably much better but I made a mistake in the last sector, as I missed a braking point, and that could have brought me closer to (team-mate) Dusan (Borkovic). I’m a little bit disappointed, but at least we have the car in one piece and ready for tomorrow.”

Despite the struggles, Homola says the experience he gained is precious: “Honestly I like these conditions, it’s good to gain experience in the wet. The others are more experienced, so I’m happy I’m catching them. I’m also happy I am quite close to the Craft-Bamboo SEATs, so maybe I just needed one more lap to be quicker and more precise. After all, it was the same for everyone and it will help for the future. It was positive, but it could have been better.”

As for tomorrow’s races, be it wet or dry, Homola is not interested in the title race, saying he is ready to fight and he will do his best to make up positions as fast as he can: “I don’t know if it will rain or not, but whatever condition we have I honestly don’t care much about other people fighting for the championship in front of me or behind me. I will do my race to get where I belong, at least in the top five, because I have nothing to lose. I just want to finish the races and score points, I know it’s a little bit difficult to pass on this track, but I won’t let anybody through as they’re not even in my team. I will focus just on myself and I don’t care who will be the champion.”

If he had to choose, rather surprisingly Homola would prefer a wet race, in order to gain more experience in the rain on the tricky Circuito da Guia: “I enjoyed qualifying, and I would also like to have a wet race, as it would be a new experience for me. I know I can perform well, so it would be nice to gain more experience and have some fun. Every time I go out on a wet track is a moment to grow, so that would be interesting.”
