No penalty following Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom incident

The Supercars stewards have decided to not penalise Jamie Whincup for the incident with Mark Winterbottom in the first Supercars race of the year in Adelaide.

The two came together at Turn 5 on lap 45, resulting in a spin for Winterbottom.

“I don’t know how I could have done anything different. There was a pass on, I went down the inside and held it in tight and was fully under control,” said Whincup to Supercars.com.

“I’m surprised he tried to stick around the outside. He knew I was there, he decided to stay there, we tangled and he got turned around. It’s unfortunate because you don’t want to see cars get turned around but the only thing I could have done is not made the pass and that’s not racing.”

The Prodrive Racing Australia driver was, no surprise, not of the same view as his Triple Eight Race Engineering competitor.

“I’m always going to say that Jamie deserved a penalty and Triple Eight are always going to say he didn’t. It was certainly disappointing for us. The first race of the season you don’t need to be dive-bombing like that, but it’s definitely line-ball,” said Winterbottom.

Brad Jones Racing was fined 10,000 AUD and had 96 points removed from the teams’ championship after it was found that Nick Percat’s car had no memory card in the judicial camera.

Todd Kelly had 35 points removed in the drivers’ championship following an incident with Will Davison and James Moffat on the opening lap, which saw Davison hitting the wall and retiring from the race.
