Chaos at Våler
The races of today at the norwegian Våler-track promises good action for the final race at Mantorp. It was a really exciting final race. The final result was quite a surprise, even the winner Richard Göransson couldn´t believe it.
“No, I didn´t think this would happen. I can´t believe its true. But I was lucky”, Göransson said after the race.
Göransson amazingly enough got the lead on the very last lap. It was the Peugeot-driver Johan Stureson who had to retire with only two corners left. Problems with the fuel supply ended his race so abruptly.
“Amazing, it was only two corners left”, said a sad Stureson after the race.
But Stureson is not the only driver that just want to forget this race. Home-boy Tommy Rustad and Edward Sanström disapeared early in the race.
“I got a small nudge from a red Audi. Not much, but it was enough for me to spin. But it has been like this all season. The qualifying goes well and then something like this happens”, Rustad said.
Robert Dahlgren who dominated the practice sessions and got pole position also had to see the races from the pits. Dahlgren went off the track in a spectacular way after he put a wheel in the gravel.
Right after the Dahlgren incident it looked like Tomas Engström could take the victory in his Honda Accord. But Engström was forced to join the squad of upset drivers. It was at the same time as the Dahlgren-incident that his race was destroyed. First Engström passed during yellow flag, then he got tricked by Göransson during the restart.
“Göransson had some kind of problem, his motor sounded very rough”, Engström said.
But it was just a game Göransson admitted after the race:
“For sure I just played with him. I fooled him at the start and caused the chaos.”
Right after the restart Engström was penalised for the overtaking during yellow flag, but that had no effect since Engström suffered from a puncture.
“At least I got a puncture right after”, a sour Engström said after the race who promised revenge on Göransson at Mantorp.
Engströms puncture probably occured at the same time as Ekblom had to retire. Engström and Göransson went side by side after the restart, and Ekblom followed them. Unfortiunately this resulted in Ekbloms retirement. Engström and Ekblom collided and the Audi-driver went off in to the barriers.
When the chequred flag fell and the dust settled, only nine cars were left.
The two BMW-drivers Göransson and Björk have now pulled away in the championship. Göransson leads with 117 points and Björk is behind him with 103 points. Closest to the BMW-duo is Engström on 77 points, and he has Stureson only two points behind.
Ekblom is fifth with 73 points, followed by the Volvo-duo Sanström (69 points) and Dahlgren (57 points).
With double points in the final race at Mantorp, the championship is still wide open. Panels will fly and paint will be swapped. Read all about it here as we will be on the scene on the 18:th of September at Mantorp Park.
