Peter Brock killed in rally incident
Legendary Australian racer Peter Brock has been killed in a rally incident. Brock was competing in a tarmac rally near the city of Perth in Australia. He was driving a Daytona Coupé and went off the road straight in to a tree. Brock was killed instantly while his co-driver Mick Hone was injured.
Brock became 61 years old and was a true motorsports legend. During his year he raced many different touring car series. He was most famous for his nine victories in the Bathurst 1000 race where he earned his nickname “King of the Mountain”. He also won the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1974, 1978 and 1980.
Brock retired from racing in 1997 and only made some brief appearances in motorsport after that. His last big win was the 2003 Bathurst 24 hour race, which he won together with Greg Murphy, Jason Bright and Todd Kelly.
“He topped Australian motorsports during the 70’s and 80’s and he drove with such precision that he was called “Peter Perfect” by his opponents,” Australian prime minister John Howard said to Sidney Morning Herald.
Brock leaves his two children Robert and Alexandra as well as his earlier partner Beverly’s son James.
