At last good results for Sandström
Things have not gone well for Flash Engineering-driver Edward Sandström. He crashed heavily at Mantorp Park during the first part of the season, totalling his car and left unable to drive any more of the season. During the last race of the STCC he made a guest appearance in Porsche Carrera Cup which ended on the first lap after a radiator broke and poured water on the tyres.
The revenge for Sandström came this weekend at Spa Francorchamps during a guest appearance in the Dunlop Great & British AVO Ginetta Championship. Sandström got to drive the VIP-car for Dunlop.
“This is really great and a big honour for me,” Sandström said before the race.
Things started well, Sandström took pole for both races with a big margin. His best lap time was almost a second quicker than his closest opponent. The Ginetta boss Martin Phaff was really satisfied with Sandström’s performance in the guest car.
“Well, what can I say. We are more than satisfied. Here comes this tall wiking to Spa, sits down in the Dunlop VIP-car and drives it like he has never done anything else before. It is very impressive when you realise that his opponents have a full season behind them.”
The first race was run in wet conditions which dried up towards the end of the race. Sandström had a hard fight with Mark Warina who overtook the Swede on the penultimate lap. Sandström had none of it and past Warnia on the outside in the Blanchimont corner on the very last lap on at the same time as he noted fastest lap of the race.
The second race also meant another victory for Sandström. When the chequered flag dropped there was only 0.1 seconds between Sandström and David Devine who took second place.
“This was without a doubt one of the best races I have ever done and I promise that Dunlop and the guys from Ginetta cheered. They never thought that an unknown Swede would come to Spa and beat their best guys – not once but twice,” an overjoyed Sandström said after the race.
