Opel & Mercedes test for Simonsen

Andreas Simonsen won the STCC support class S60 Challenge this year and as a prize got a full test day with the Volvo Polestar STCC-team. The test went fine and Simonsen won a seat in the DTC-final. Sadly though Simonsen was too young, he is only 17 years old, for the race. But Simonsen’s schedule has been filled since then with testing for different STCC-teams.

Last week Simonsen completed a test for Opel Team Sweden. The test took place at Gelleråsen and Simonsen drove the Astra Tommy Rustad drove earlier in STCC.

“It was nice to drive the Opel really hard. Unfortunately I only got to do a few laps before the rain came. But it went fine despite the wet conditions,” Simonsen told Sportinformation.

Opel Team Sweden team boss Jan Warnestad commented on the matter.

“We have had plans for a junior team in the STCC, but so far we haven’t been able to go through with those plans. We still have the car Rustad drove previously. That car complies with the rules for the privateers’ cup. We are pleased with Simonsen’s performance during the,” Warnestad said.

A few days later Simonsen completed a test with the Mercedes-team at Anderstorp. There are rumours that Mercedes-driver Hans Simonsson is leaving the Mercedes-team and that Tobias Johansson is looking for a new team mate.

“Andreas is very talented and he completed the test in a good way. It was slippery at Anderstorp and very little grip, but he did a good job anyway,” Johansson said.

Andreas Simonsen is for sure one to watch for the 2007 STCC season!
