BTCC provisional 2007 calendar

Britain’s biggest motor racing series, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, has today revealed its 2007 event calendar.

The championship will once again be decided at ten race meetings, each comprising three rounds. Currently, seven different counties across the UK – Cheshire, Fife, Hampshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Norfolk and North Yorkshire – will benefit from the BTCC’s arrival. The season’s second fixture on 22 April will be announced shortly.

Notably, the Thruxton circuit in Hampshire joins Brands Hatch in Kent in staging two of the season’s ten fixtures. Thruxton’s second meeting, the season finale in October, replaces Mondello Park in Ireland. It will be the first time since 1999 that Thruxton has staged two BTCC fixtures in a season.

BTCC Series Director Alan Gow comments: “Our 2007 calendar has been particularly challenging to formulate, but has been devised to avoid as many clashes as possible with other major sporting events, primarily for our television scheduling. Hence, for example, the gap between the last two race meetings – to allow for the broadcasting demands of the Rugby World Cup.

“Unfortunately, we will not be returning to Mondello Park in 2007. This is in direct response to the great majority of BTCC teams and support race championships, all of whom felt that their sponsors (and budgets) would be better served if all events were held within the UK.

“With interest in the championship at a far higher level than we have seen for many years, along with the introduction of new cars and regulations, 2007 promises to be another milestone in the long and proud history of the BTCC.”

The BTCC will confirm which of the Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Donington Park circuit lay-outs it will race on at a later date.
