First win of the season for T.Björk
Reigning champion Thed Björk took his first win of the year today at Falkenberg. He finished first ahead of points leader Fredrik Ekblom and Richard Göransson in a very eventul race.
“This feels very nice. I started from pole, we had a very good pitstop and a comfortable lead,” said Björk.
But the comfortable lead was quickly reduced when the race was red flagged with only four laps left. Fredrik Lestrup had a huge accident on the start/finish-straight after a misunderstanding with Viktor Huggare. Lestrup’s BMW spun across the track and in to the barriers, completely destroying the car.
“I went to pass Huggare who was a lap behind, we collided and I went off the track. I am ok, unlike my car,” said Lestrup.
The race was red flagged and was later restarted in the order the cars were the lap before the accident. Championship leader Ekblom was able to maintain his second place.
“I wanted to get past Björk but I couldn’t. It is very nice that we pulled ahead in the championship before the summer break,” said Ekblom.
Third was Richard Göransson who was a happy man after taking a podium with the heaviest car of the field after his win in the last race of Våler.
“I am very happy. I was a bit lucky when I got a puncture in the final corner and could pit immideately. Some problems this weekend but on the whole I am happy,” said Göransson.
Janne “Flash” Nilsson took fourth place behind his team mate after recieving a drive through-penalty before the restart. In the restart Flash was seventh but made an amazing start and was fourth after only a couple of corners.
“I guess I am happy with fourth after all problems we had during the race. I was penalized with a drive through after they claim that I made a jump start, something that I do not agree with,” said Flash.
Ekblom still leads the championship ahead of Volvo’s Robert Dahlgren. But Göransson is only two points behind in third place as Dahlgren only claimed three points today.
“We had problems with the engine this weekend and the pace just was not there,” said Dahlgren.
The Polestar Volvo team’s technical boss Jan Andersson was unhappy with the weekend with Alexander Stockenfeldt not behing able to start.
“Today we had a lot of technical problems. It think we got all of the previous six races thinkable problems in one lump now,” Andersson said.
Next up is Gelleråsen on August the 19:th as the STCC enters a summer break.
