Update on Chevrolet, Opel & Volvo-drivers

Swedish Touring Car Championship teams Chevrolet, Opel and Volvo still have not announced all of their drivers for the 2008 season. The season and deadlines for signing drivers is starting to get closer. Volvo looks to be closest announcing their second driver along side Robert Dahlgren. According to our information Norwegian Tommy Rustad will drive the car, leaving previous driver Alexander Stockenfeldt in the cold.

Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden are set to run the same Chevrolet Lacetti as they ran last year. But it is unclear if the financial problems of last year are solved. The driver for the 2008 season will most likely bring in money to the project and according to our information it could be previous STCC-driver and Norwegian Thomas Schie.

What we earlier reported about Opel not even coming to the starting line of 2008 seems to have changed. Instead we could see three different drivers behind the wheels of Opel-cars.

As Rustad seem to be the Volvo-man, Jens Edman is trying to find another STCC-drive. And the blue Opel Astra of Opel Team Sweden could be the Swede’s new home of 2008. Edman last drove in the STCC 2001 and has since then mainly been driving in the DTC.

The other two Opel-drivers are reported to be young gun Joakim Ahlberg and Tobias Johansson. Ahlberg previously announced that he was looking for a BMW 320i E46 for his program in the privateers cup. But now it seems as he is going drive a black Opel Astra Coupé, renting it from Opel Team Sweden, just as privateers champion Joakim Frid did last year.

Tobias Johansson could be behind the wheel of Rustad’s 2007 Opel Astra, as the team is reported to be building a new Astra for Edman. Johansson earlier announced that he is going to ditch his Mercedes C-Class and look for another car. At first it seemed as if he was going to get a Vauxhall Vectra from the BTCC. But due to financial reasons it is more likely that we see him in a Opel Astra in the STCC 2008.
