Opel Team Sweden pulls out of STCC
Opel Team Sweden today announced that they will not be on the grid of the Swedish Touring Car Championship. For the first time in eight years there will not be a ‘works’ Opel on the grid.
“It is very sad that we are unable to be on the grid this year. We have come to a point where we have to choose. To be in the STCC and fight for top positions takes a lot of resources. Unfortunately we do not have the economy,” said team boss Jan Warnestad.
The team leaves the racing scene despite having developed a 2008 version of the Opel Astra. During the winter the team has negotiated with Jens Edman and Tobias Johansson, among others.
According to our information it is likely that we will see at least one Opel on the grid of STCC 2008, but with private owners. The team has got at least three cars in their workshop – the new Opel Astra, the one that Rustad ran last year and the one that Joakim Frid ran in the privateers cup last year.
“All cars are ready to either buy or rent. We are open for suggestions,” said Warnestad.
