Björk heads penalty weight list for Sturup

Thed Björk is for the first time this year topping the ballast weight list of the Swedish Touring Car Championship. This weekend the championship runs at Sturup Raceway and after Björk’s win in Gothenburg his Honda Accord will weigh 1200 kilos. Championship leader Fredrik Ekblom in second heaviest, only five kilos behind. Third is Jan “Flash” Nilsson with 1185 kilos.

Previous championship leader Richard Göransson will have a relatively light BMW at Sturup with 1155 kilos and the eight heaviest car in the championship.

The weight rules of the STCC are quite complicated. First a base weight for each car is decided individually. The BMW 320si E90 for example has a base weight of 1140 with an H-patternd gearbox (+30 kilos for sequential). The Peugeot 308 has the lightest base weight of the championship with 1110 kilos. The base weight is decided by the STCC technical commission.

All cars are then given 20 kilos as base placement weight. Depending on the position in the previous race and in the championship (only top four) this weight is either reduced or increased.

If the car is run with bio-ethanol, the Volvo C30 is the only car using bio-ethanol, 12 kilos is removed. Since STCC is broadcasted live on TV another 5 kilos are added to all cars.

Lost? Here is an example:

Fredrik Ekblom – BMW 320si

Base weight: 1140 kg
Base placement weight: +20 kg
Camera weight: +5 kg
Bio ethanol: 0 kg
Last race weight penalty (3rd): +10 kg
Championship weight penalty (1st): +20 kg

1140+20+5+10+20 = 1195 kilo
