Two races and no pitstop in STCC 2009
The Swedish Touring Car Championship will change its race format for 2009. The pit stop will be scrapped and two races will be held per weekend instead of one. Furthermore has the S2000 rules been confirmed until 2010.
“We are listening to our customers and teams and we need to lower the costs for the competitors,” said STCC MD Bob Huzell.
The format with one race including a pit stop was introduced in 2006. The pit stop has lead to increased costs.
“The development has gone in a terrible speed and despite restrictions in the rules it is to expensive now for the teams to compete with pit stops. The top teams are investing millions to gain tenths in the pit stops and it is hard for the smaller teams to keep up. We feel that it is stopping the growth of the class,” said Huzell.
The format of the two races that are going to be introduced next year is still unclear.
“We are finalizing the details, but our base is that we take a decision on how the championship can develop in the best possible way. We are awaiting opinions from the teams and organisers,” said Huzell.
The S2000-regulations, that STCC share with WTCC, DTC and BTCC, will continue until at least 2010.
“We have manufacturers and dealers that have put a lot of effort in these rules and we have today not initialized any work to find a new set of rules,” said Huzell.
