Tim Harvey pleased with BTCC-test

The 1992 British Touring Car Championship champion Tim Harvey enjoyed his first run in a BTCC-car for six years. Harvey tested the BMW 320si of Motorbase Performance at Brands Hatch.
“I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The car was easy to drive, a little softer than the Super Touring cars I used to race, and it still felt pretty quick,” said Harvey to Autosport.

While Harvey took the BTCC title in 1992 in a BMW, it has been a long time since he drove a touring car BMW.

“I’ve only driven a BMW touring car briefly over the past few years, when I did a tyre test for Edenbridge, but the last time I raced one was in Asian Touring Cars back in about 1994, so it really got the old juices flowing again.”

While the rumors and speculations are running hot, Harvey says he is not planning a return to BTCC.

“If I did that then I’d have to jack in racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup – which I love – and the touring car commentary, and I don’t know if I want to do that. I’d say a comeback is highly unlikely.”

The touring cars Harvery used to drive were build under the very popular Super Touring-rules, the cars of today (S2000) are different.

“Just as I anticipated, the driving technique needs to be very precise. But the modern-day Super 2000-spec BMW is difficult to compare to one of the ‘super touring’ cars that I drove in the Nineties – when I won the title we had anti-lock braking (ABS) and the super tourers were also quite a bit stiffer,” said Harvey to BTCC.net.
