Davison joins Stone Brothers Racing
Stone brothers racing have officially confirmed that Alex Davison, older brother of Will Davison, will drive the flagship number 4 FG Ford Falcon for the next three seasons. Davison (29), who has spent the last 9 years of his racing career driving Porsches between Europe and Australia in both Porsche Cups and endurance racing, is determined to start 2009 as a front runner.
Melbourne Born Davison will relocate from his European home to Queensland to join his new employers. Like many other V8 Supercar teams, Davison, who signed with SBR late last year, was forced to delay any official announcements till the New Year because of existing contracts.
“I’m very excited about it; I don’t have to hold my tongue anymore, because I have been pretty pumped about it for the past month or so. I’m looking forward to moving up to Queensland and starting to work with my new team,” Davison said at the official announcement.
“It’s the first time in my career that I have gone into January, let alone Christmas, knowing what I am doing the next season, so it will be great for all of us to have some continuity and stability and I hope that we can really build some great relationships and results over the next three years.”
Davison will be sponsored by Industrial tools manufacturer, Irwin Tools for at least the 2009 season. Irwin came over to SBR when they signed a technical alliance with Britek motorsports.
Davison has some experience in a V8 Supercar thanks to participating in endurance races with Perkins Motorsport and DJR and states that this, along with his international experience, should see him as a competitive threat to other drivers.
“The last 10 years I have raced in a lot of categories, and the majority of that time, apart from a couple of years in Carrera Cup in Australia, has been overseas. I have raced with some pretty good teams and against some high profile drivers and all of that experience helps you out when you try something new,” he said.
“Driving Porches in the past won’t help me drive a V8 Supercar, but I have done the endurance races in the past few years which will make it much easier for me to jump into a V8 Supercar and feel pretty comfortable straight away.”
Davison says he is not taking any notice of the troubles his predecessor, James Courtney, another driver with an international career, had when he was the pilot of the number 4.
“My ultimate goal is to win races and championships for Stone Brothers Racing, but it’s just a matter of how quickly I can get there. I understand how tough V8 Supercars is and to think that I will do that in my first full season is probably unrealistic,” he declared.
Davison also states he excited about racing his younger brother Will, and goes on to say that watching his brother compete in V8’s and hearing how much he was having, helped him make the decision to race in the series.
“We have to treat each other as competitors out on the track. Both of our teams work too hard and there is too much at stake to give each other any favours out there. We’ll be racing hard. I am a clean racer, but I am sure there will be times throughout the season when we bang wheels – hopefully it doesn’t get too nasty!” he joked.
Because of the testing ban put in place by AVESCO, Davison will have to wait until early march at the official pre-season test for Queensland teams, before he can get behind the wheel if the new FG in anger. He does state however, that he has been piloting the SBR ‘3-ride’ Ford Falcon.
“That was a great opportunity to get a feel for their car and get to know everyone in the team, but it won’t be until early March when I get to do a proper run in the new car.”
