Volkswagen slapped with 50 extra kilos
Volkswagen was slapped with 50 kilos of extra weight just before the Swedish Touring Car Championship premiere. The reason for it is reported to be the fact that Volkswagen Motorsport did not reveal all required details of the car to the STCC organization.
“There was a number of details that were not fulfilled, we had to take this measure,” said Johnny Haraldsson, Technical Director of STCC, to TouringCarTimes.com.
The turbo charged bio gas powered Volkswagen Scirocco is based on the version constructed last year for the Nürburgring 24 hour race.
The STCC organization required control of certain points of the car to allow it in to the championship.
“We set up a number of details at the beginning of this project which had to be fullfiled,” said Haraldsson.
The Volkswagen team was unhappy with the decision to add 50 kilos which made the cars over 100 kilos heavier compared to some cars in the championship.
“Our cars weighed 105 kilos more than the Volvo’s at Mantorp. Anyone understands that it is hard to be competitive under such circumstances,” said Marcus Thomasfolk, Head of Communications at Volkswagen Sweden to TouringCarTimes.com.
The STCC organization and the team are going to have a meeting this week regarding the details that needs to be clarified.
“The team is having a dialogue with STCC in this matter and we hope to reach a solution soon. Our position is that a certain extra weight is acceptable, as the turbo is a new concept,” said Thomasfolk.
