Johnny Herbert to do final three rounds
TouringCarTimes understands that Johnny Herbert is in pole position to replace James Thompson at Team Dynamics for the final three rounds of the season. A clash with the WTCC races at Imola and Australian V8 commitments mean Knockhill will be Thompson’s final outing in the BTCC this season, opening the door for Herbert’s debut in the British Touring Car Championship.
The treble Grand Prix winner tested for Team Dynamics at Rockingham in July, and now insiders have named Herbert to TouringCarTimes, as being in pole position to take the vacant seat alongside David Pinkney, with the move expected to be announced shortly.
Having also driven the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Herbert was a respectable 12th fastest in the Rockingham test.
Rockingham was his first drive of a BTCC car in anger, and it now appears that a race seat for the final three meetings will materialise.
Should, as expected, Herbert join the series, he’ll become the latest in a long line of Grand Prix winners to turn out in the BTCC, a list which famously includes Jim Clark, Stirling Moss and Nigel Mansell.
