Björks dreadful season continued in Gothenburg
Thed Björk crashed his BMW during the first qualifying session in Gothenburg. The Flash Engineering driver held 130 km/h when spun and hit the barriers with the rear first, recording 4.5 G in the moment of impact.
“Something snapped in the rear and I spun. While you are properly protected in the BMW, it feels when you hit the barriers that hard. I am a bit sore in my body now,” said Björk.
Björk missed the first race because of the crash and looked set to miss the second race as well. But amazingly enough the mechanics managed to get his car out for the second race.
“At a first glance it looked impossible. But we threw our selves at it and managed it with only a couple of minutes left ahead of the second race,” said Magnus Karlsson, chief mechanic of Björk.
Björk started from the back of the grid and made a cracking race, passing 13 cars. But his luck ended when a drive shaft broke, five laps from the finish when he was seventh.
“Unfortunately this weekend was another one to forget. But I am incredibly grateful and proud over the work the team did with the car,” said Björk.
Björk’s start of the season has been anything but good. The BMW driver has only scored 41 points in eight races and is currently ninth in the championship.
“Our luck has been absent for very long now. But we know that we have the speed to fight for victories. It feels like it cannot go any worse now, at Falkenberg we are going to have a new start of the championship. We have not given up, not by a long run,” said Björk.
