Volvo criticizes Volkswagen turbo regulations

The Volvo team Polestar Racing has expressed sever criticism over the regulations for the bio-gas powered Volkswagen Scirocco.
“We put down a lot of hours and money during the winter to find 3 or 4 horses in the engine. Then STCC AB just adjust the turbo pressure for Volkswagen and they have done the same work in no time,” said Volvo team boss Christian Dahl to SVT.

The Volkswagen Team Biogas.se is planning to debut a new S2000 specification car next weekend at Falkenberg. Volvo says that the adjustments in turbo pressure for the bio-gas Volkswagen engine makes it impossible to get it equal to the other cars.

“It is like in a swimming contest where some get to wear fins, which turns out to be too good. Then they get a weight belt and then you have to try and balance that,” said Dahl.

“They can test all that they want, yesterday, today and tomorrow. 0.5% more turbo pressure gives more than all test days,” said Dahl.

Biogas.se team boss Tommy Kristoffersson says that it is complete nonsense and that the Volvo team should see them selves in the mirror.

“It is shameful to say something like that. This is not how it is done. It is always the guys in front that get criticized. They should look them selves in the mirror,” said Kristoffersson.

Volkswagen driver Fredrik Ekblom has done a strong season so far, winning the first race in a bio-gas powered car at Karlskoga, and is third in the championship. Ekblom meets the criticism with ease.

“I take it as a compliment, they are afraid of us and it is fun that they are whining about us,” said Ekblom.

The fact that the Volkswagen cars are the only ones with turbo is nothing strange, according to Ekblom.

“You got to have a turbo with bio-gas engines. The bio-gas is not as explosive as petrol. We need to have a turbo to push it in to the cylinders, we can’t take part without a turbo,” said Ekblom.

Both the Volkswagen team and the Volvo team use nationally homologated cars that differs to the regular S2000 cars:

Volkswagen: Turbo, bio-gas, two-door, plastic windows and doors
Volvo: Bio-ethanol, two-door
