Thompson wins race one from Göransson
James Thompson took a commanding victory in the first Scandinavian Touring Car Cup race of the weekend at Jyllandsringen. The Brit managed to get past both Tommy Rustad and pole position man Robert Dahlgren early on in the race.
“A really good race. Dahlgren was a gentleman letting me past. After that I put in a stream of fast laps, a really nice result, the team has worked really hard,” said Thompson.
While Thompson pulled away in the lead, there was drama for second place overall and the victory in of the Swedish Touring Car Championship drivers.
Richard Göransson was a man on a charge in the race, getting past Tommy Rustad in a controversial move. Rustad tried to defend as Göransson was on the way past, making contact, something Rustad received a penalty round for.
Göransson then caught up with championship rival Dahglren on the very last lap. The BMW-man launched a late attack on the Volvo-driver with just three corners to go and managed to get past.
Dahlgren tried to respond out of the last corner, in a drag race to the finish line, a race that Göransson won with 0.119 seconds.
Casper Elgaard made a strong drive to fourth in the race from sixth on the grid. Jason Watt came home fifth ahead of Tommy Rustad and a charging Robert Schlünssen.
Thed Björk squeezed past Fredrik Ekblom in the final part of the race, getting eight and pole position for the second race. Björk was one of the drivers getting a penalty round after contact with Mattias Andersson and Johan Sturesson, an incident resulting in the retirement of Stureson.
Front-men Jan Magnussen and Jens Reno Møller were eliminated early on in the race. Magnussen retired with suspension damage and Møller had to pit with a puncture.
