Björk wins as Dahlgren takes Scandinavian title
Thed Björk secured his second victory of the year and passed pole position man Patrik Olsson in an eventful and wet second STCC race at Knutstorp.
“This was a superb race, I am so pleased. The pass on Olsson was clean and then I was just able to pull away,” said Björk.
Olsson kept second and crossed the line three seconds ahead of Jan Magnussen.
“I am pleased, it was a tough race but nice to finally get some results,” said Magnussen.
Roger Eriksson crossed the line as fourth but was after the race penalized with 30 seconds after the stewards found him having been too rough in his battle with Mattias Andersson. And this was just one of many controversies in the race.
Richard Göransson was once again subject to controversy. The previous STCC championship leader was penalized with a drive through penalty for incidents with Johan Stureson and Tommy Rustad.
“I think the penalty was a subject for argument. But that is the way it is. We were fastest by far in the rain and I had to get up through the field quickly. You can’t just sit and wait when you are that much quicker,” said Göransson.
Göransson started 15:th but quickly started to cut through the field. He gave Stureson a push from behind, resulting in Stureson going off track. A few laps later Göransson had caught Rustad and the two collided in the first corner.
Göransson tried to dive on the inside, but did not get up alongside the Volvo-driver and pushed him in to a slide from behind.
The action continued for Göransson as he exited the pits from his drive through. The WestCoast Racing-driver came out in the thick of a battle between Jan “Flash” Nilsson, Dick Sahlén, Rustad and Stureson.
“Flash” dived on the inside of Göransson, passing him. A few corners later Göransson dived on the inside of “Flash”, resulting in a spin into the gravel for “Flash”. Göransson finished eight in the end, behind his championship rivals Robert Dahlgren and Fredrik Ekblom.
Ekblom gained points on the top two of the championship with a finish in fifth position ahead of Dahlgren in sixth. The sixth position was enough for Dahlgren to secure the Scandinavian Touring Car Cup title.
“It feels awesome. It is nice to take a title with so many big names in the championship. It was extra nice to retake the championship lead in the Swedish championship as well,” said Dahlgren.
As Göransson only managed to get six points from this weekend, Dahlgren is back in the lead of the Swedish Touring Car Championship, seven points ahead of Göransson and 18 points ahead of Ekblom.
