It’s Team Aon vs. Airwaves BMW for indie crown

With a tough weekend for Paul O’Neill, it’s now down to two pairs of of team-mates to battle it out for the BTCC Independent drivers’ championship at Brands Hatch next month.

It’s also a certainty that we’ll see a new independent drivers’ and teams’ champion, with Colin Turkington not running this year to defend his title, and West Surrey Racing now unable to claim their fourth consecutive trophy in the rankings.

Airwaves BMW, in their fifth season in the BTCC head to Brands Hatch with an outside shot at both titles. Steven Kane is their best placed driver, 18 points down on Team Aon’s Tom Onslow-Cole, with 45 points available.

In the teams’ championship, also with 45 points available, Team Aon lead Airwaves BMW by 25 points.

Brands Hatch threatens to be a good circuit for the Ford Focus, though both teams took victories at the Grand Prix course back in May.

Arena Motorsport, the operation behind Team Aon are well placed to take their first independents’ championship, as well as being in outside contention for overall honours in the drivers and manufacturers/constructors championship.

This is Arena’s fourth season in the BTCC as an independent entrant, and both drivers Tom Chilton and Tom Onslow-Cole can take the independent drivers’ title at the season finale at Brands Hatch, with Chilton in third, 22 points behind his team-mate.
