Rustad wins finale but Göransson is the champ
Tommy Rustad won the final race of the year but all eyes were on Richard Göransson as he nipped the title in front of Robert Dahlgren with just two points. Göransson is now the only driver ever to have claimed four STCC titles.
“It is a big day today, I am not sure what to say. It feels like a great liberation, this is my best championship victory ever,” said a very happy Göransson.
Jan “Flash” Nilsson was moved to pole position as Johan Kristoffersson was disqualified from the first race. But the BMW-driver only kept the lead for one lap before Rustad made his way past up in to a lead he never lost.
“A fantastic way to end the season, I am really happy also to secure the team title for Polestar Racing,” said Rustad.
Viktor Hallrup claimed his first STCC podium finish ever in the Chevrolet Cruze.
It was a tense race for Göransson and title rival Dahlgren. At first it seemed as the Volvo-driver was going to take the title. But Göransson fought very hard to get past Patrik Olsson for third, a position that was enough for the WestCoast Racing-driver to take the title.
Dahlgren had a very tough race and only managed to finish ninth. The Volvo-man had to fend off attacks from Johan Sturesson and Kristoffersson for the majority of the race and crossed the line 22 seconds behind his team mate and winner Rustad.
“I’m not sure what we lacked to day, we just did not have the pace. Göransson and WestCoast Racing were more even than we were this season,” said Dahlgren.
Flash Engineering-drivers “Flash” and Björk finished fourth and fifth, Björk fighting his way from 13th on the grid after the penalty in race one.
Olsson claimed seventh ahead of Roger Eriksson and Fredrik Ekblom, who claimed third in the championship.
