STCC moves closer to NGTC switch in 2012
The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship organisers are moving closer to confirm NGTC as new regulations for 2012.
“After having studied the classes and regulations existing, we have come to the conclusion that the British is the one suiting us best. The new regulations of BTCC is the best compromise,” said STCC technical director Johnny Haraldsson to Bilsport.
The new regulations were supposed to have been introduced during the Scandinavian final at Knutstorp three weeks ago.
“We were not able to do that as we are still waiting on some information from England,” said Haraldsson.
While STCC looks set to use NGTC, it seems that there are going to be some alterations to the regulations when used in Scandinavia compared to Britain. The series is looking in to only allowing rear wheel drive as well as upping the power output to around 380 BHP from the start.
“The new STCC is for sure going to be quicker,” said Haraldsson.
The current S2000 cars are going to be allowed after 2012, but only in the privateers cup. The STCC is also going to run their own suppliers for areas such as engines, transmission and suspension.
“The BTCC has for example chosen Swindon for engines and X-trac for transmission. Our suppliers have not been set yet, but there are both local and international companies interested,” said Haraldsson.
Haraldsson is estimating the cost for a car of the new regulations to 150.000 euro, excluding engine. The NGTC engine used this year in the BTCC costs 30.000 euro to rent for a season, including service costs. That makes for an estimated total of 180.000 euro for a complete car with engine, around 25 % less than the current S2000 cars.
“We are going to freeze the regulations for five years and the cars running for that period has to be built with a proper base,” said Haraldsson.
