WestCoast Racing expands to two cars with Öhlin
WestCoast Racing expands back to two cars for the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship 2011 after running just one car for Richard Göransson in 2010. Martin Öhlin steps up to STCC from Carrera Cup Scandinavia.
“This is going to be great. It feels completely right taking this step now and especially to take the step with WestCoast Racing,” said Öhlin.
Öhlin, son of Öhlins dampers founder Kenth Öhlin, has done three seasons in Carrera Cup Scandinavia and did the Junior Touring Car Championship in Sweden before that. The Swede moved to WestCoast Racing last year, driving the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and tested the BMW 320si earlier this year.
“The test I completed with the team made me wanting more. It was more fun than I thought and it required a more technical driving style. This gives me the chance to develop even more as a driver,” said Öhlin.
Team boss Dick Jönsson-Wigroth is looking forward to have Öhlin stepping up to STCC.
“It is nice to be able to contribute to the growth of STCC and after three years in Carrera Cup, it is a natural step to join the highest division,” said Jönsson-Wigroth.
With reigning champion Göransson as team mate, Öhlin is going to face tough opposition not only from outside the team.
“I have a great team around me so anything is possible. But there are many fast drivers in STCC that you have to beat, especially with the Danish drivers joining the series. A realistic goal is to be in top eight from the start and try to improve that with WestCoast,” said Öhlin.
While Göransson is expected to continue for WestCoast Racing, information to TouringCarTimes indicates that a contract has not yet been signed for 2011.
