Ekblom to drive Nürburgring 24hrs for Volkswagen

Triple STCC champion Fredrik Ekblom is going to take part in the Nürburgring 24 hours 2011 for Volkswagen.
“F1 was my top dream at the start of my career. But a close second was to drive for a manufacturer team in some form. I have done that previously and to be able to represent Volkswagen in the 24 hours is something I see as a great privilege,” said Ekblom.

The Swede is going to drive the all-new 440 bhp Volkswagen Golf, called the “Golf 24”, in honor of the 35-year anniversary of the Golf GTI.

“Fredrik has got vast experience of racing and he makes few or no mistakes at all. As head of Volkswagen Sweden I feel a pride in having such a skilled driver to represent both Sweden and Volkswagen in this legendary race this summer,” said Sten Forsberg, Managing Director of Volkswagen Sweden.

The Nürburgring 24 hour race is visited by close to 300 000 spectators each year and the race it self hosts more than 200 cars with three drivers per car on average.

“There are really special conditions there, more than 200 cars and a mix of enthusiastic amateurs and professional teams. And all this on one of the most demanding circuits in the world. It is like nothing else and it really is a huge challenge,” said Ekblom.
