Göransson confirmed to be out for three months
Quadruple STCC champion Richard Göransson is going to be out for at least three months due to the spinal injury the BMW driver sustained in a crash at Jyllandsringen yesterday.
“It is of course disappointing that Richard looks set to be out for such a long time, but it is good that we have got more information on his injuries,” said Dick Jönsson-Wigroth, Team Principal of WestCoast Racing.
The doctors at the Århus hospital in Denmark has confirmed fractures on two vertebras and estimates the length of recovery to three months.
Göransson was leading the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship premiere race when something failed in his BMW 320si and he went straight in to the barriers at high speed.
“It was a serious accident and both the car and Richard were subjected to extreme forces. The fact that he was not more seriously injured is a testament to the high level of safety of these cars,” said Göransson.
Göransson is going to be transported back home to Sweden on wednesday while the team is going to do an technical analysis of the accident and lay out a plan for the remainder of the STCC season.
The team has appointed former STCC racer Fredrik Lestrup as third driver for the team, it remains to be seen if he gets to step in for Göransson or if the team is only going to continue with one car for team mate Martin Öhlin.
The TouringCarTimes team wishes Richard a speedy recovery.
