“Amazing” recovery from Fredrik Ekblom
Volkswagen driver Fredrik Ekblom labels his recovery from last in the championship after the season premiere to second in the championship after Mantorp Park.
“It feels amazing to be second in the championship, especially with the season start we had,” said Ekblom.
Ekblom only managed to score one point at Jyllandsringen and both Volkswagen Scirocco drivers were far off pace. Things rapidly changed for the second race at Knutstorp where Ekblom claimed pole and won the first race, a feature he repeated at Mantorp.
“The car worked a lot better at Knutstorp and Mantorp. The key to our success is to qualify well. We need to be ahead in the races, not being forced to take defensive lines and wear out our tyres,” said Ekblom.
The Volkswagen driver had a moment during the first race at Mantorp while in the lead as the power steering ceased to work for a moment.
“The power steering stopped working when braking for a corner, but it got back instantly and I was able to stay ahead,” said Ekblom.
Team Principal Tommy Kristoffersson was pleased with the races at Mantorp, despite a tough weekend for team mate Patrik Olsson who was disqualified in qualifying due to too high turbo pressure.
“It was a good weekend for us. To claim pole and win a race is worth a lot. Fredrik showed strong championship form and Olsson had two strong races despite his tough starting position,” said Kristoffersson.
