Jan “Flash” Nilsson claims victory no 35
Jan “Flash” Nilsson secured his second victory of the year and his 35th STCC victory overall in the second race of the day at Falkenberg.
“Wonderful, one of my best victories ever! It was a bit tense after the safety car, but I was able to pull away again and it feels great,” said “Flash”.
Johan Stureson and Colin Turkington secured a BMW 1-2-3 with Stureson just 0.455 seconds behind “Flash” and Turkington a further 1.5 seconds behind.
Patrik Olsson finished fourth after an exciting last couple of laps, involving privateer Tobias Johansson and Turkington. Johansson held third for a good part of the race but lost one position to Turkington in the first corner of the lap and got in to a slide that made Olsson gain a lot of ground.
Olsson then went up alongside Johansson in to the fast right corner at the backside of the track. The both made contact, resulting in Johansson going off track in a spectacular way due to broken rear suspension, planting the SEAT León in the tyre barriers with just five laps to go.
Rickard Rydell was close to Olsson towards the end of the race but had to settle for fifth ahead of Richard Göransson. The reining champion was close to Rydell at the start of the race, but dropped a bit towards the end of the race.
Tommy Rustad made a fine recovery from 14th on the grid to 7th over the finish line, setting fastest lap of the race on the way. Race one winner Fredrik Ekblom was not able to gain ground from eighth on the grid and finished on the same position.
James Thompson, who suffered from an engine failure in the first race, finished ninth ahead of Roger Eriksson and top independent Andreas Ebbesson.
Ekblom is new championship leader after the race weekend at Falkenberg, three points ahead of Rydell. Rustad lost a lot of points on the duo ahead of him, but keeps third in the championship, although 33 points behind. Click here for complete championship standings.
