Richard Göransson secures “amazing” double

Richard Göransson secured the first double victory in the STCC since Tommy Rustad’s double at Våler in 2009. The reigning champion pulls away in the overall number of STCC victories as well, 37 compared to Jan “Flash” Nilsson’s 35.
“This is simply amazing, a double victory and 37 overall. I must thank the team, they have supported me in my rehabilitation and I am back, stronger than ever,” said Göransson.

The BMW driver started eighth and fought his way through the field in a determined way, climbing to fifth after just two laps. Rival BMW driver Johan Stureson was his final obstacle towards the victory and Göransson got past with four laps to go.

Stureson, who had fought his way past pole man Roger Eriksson a couple of laps earlier, clinged on to second, scoring enough points to move him up to third in the championship.

Rickard Rydell finished fourth, gaining two points on championship leader Fredrik Ekblom who crossed the line in fifth.

Jan “Flash” Nilsson climbed eleven positions to finish sixth from 17th on the grid. The BMW driver barged his way past Johan Kristoffersson towards the closing stages of the race, an incident the stewards are reported to be looking at currently.

Kristoffersson managed to hold on to seventh ahead of Patrik Olsson and Colin Turkington. Mattias Andersson rounded off top ten ahead of Martin Öhlin who started second but was pushed off track in the opening stages of the race.

Tommy Rustad had a troublesome race with many incidents that ultimately resulted in a puncture and a retired race. The retirement means that Rustad drops to fourth in the championship.

STCC continues at Jyllandsringen in Denmark in two weeks.
